Description: Broken Hill is commonly referred to as “The Silver City” for good reason. It is Australia's longest-lived mining city The Line of Lode is one of the world’s largest bodies of ore, containing the silver, lead and zinc that made fortunes in this remote outback city. It was named by explorer Charles Sturt in 1844 who Sturt saw and named the Barrier Range, and at the time referred to a "Broken Hill" in his diary. The broken hill that gave its name to Broken Hill actually consisted of a number of hills that appeared to have a break in them. This broken hill no longer exists, having been mined away after silver ore was discovered in 1883 by boundary rider Charles Rasp.
